SEASONAL STYLE

If you're like me, especially growing up on the east coast, you experienced a change of seasons. Brisk walks in the Fall through the dried leaves, a late night walk crunching on new fallen slow in the Winter, plus a lovely fresh colorful blooms in the Spring. And for most, Summertime not only meant longer days of sunshine, it also would means day trips or vacations down the shore or to the beach. Living in South Florida, I didn't really get to experience those change of seasons as I did in New Jersey, so I started to recreate the look & feel of a seasonal change within our home. Having a neutral base (shades of greys, browns, + black and white) allowed for numerous changes through the years - by simply switching textiles for color or shifting accessories for the mood.

I've always enjoyed mixing old & new accessories - in both fashion & decor. Read more about how to in my Fall

The system for creating the various seasonal looks is pretty simple:

The Foundation:
The white sofa
Grey walls + greige tile or wood floors
Classic white trim
Husband's fave chair (brown)
Wife's fave chair (Black)
Thrifted & painted furniture in black (which can transform with paint!)

Personalize:
Layer in a seasonal accent color
Layer in a trend
Update wall decor: switch photos / mix in abstracts

I didn't always take seasons literally: sometimes it was just inferred because of the color change which is usually:

Black + White + Green in Spring
Cool colors, such as Greens + Blues or just Blue + White in Summer
Warm colors such as Reds, Orange + Black, Browns for Fall
Whites for Winter + Evergreen for Holidays

By simply changing colors, with paint or textiles, you can easily change the 'mood' of a space. Rotating home accessories is KEY - Everything you love and own need not all be on display at the same time - Plaids for Winter, clear glass for Spring, Chinoiserie in Summer, dark woods for Fall...

I usually did the transformations on the weekend while cleaning the house. It was fun to do, and it was also very similar to making the color story changes you'd see in a store. Sometimes, I'd switch the lamps from the bedroom to the living room - Sometimes all they needed was a different shade for a refreshed look.
I didn't use all my accessories all at one time. Usually in Fall, I'd pull out more carved wood and black accessories. Then for holiday, I'd pull out the blacks & browns from the space and replace them with silver metal and glass. After holiday, I'd put away the metal and add more glass. For spring I'd use flowers. For Summer I'd use fresh cut palms. And for both Fall and Winter, I'd use my branches - but in Fall, I'd add leaves - For Winter I'd remove leaves and add something with sparkle.

Now living out west in Arizona, (coming up on a year in November) I still do some seasonal changes, but much more minimal since we are renting.

Heavier pattern mix + fur for Winter.

Bright & Cheerful mix of florals + stripes for Spring.

Crisp & Clean for Summer - and here I also changed the white shag rug for the black & white woven. The shag just looked heavy and hot every time I'd see it - and it's already in the hundred outside. Keeping things a little lighter inside gives a cool feeling in the space. But when the temps drop in late autumn, the white shag will return...

Woven rugs are thin enough to layer in the Fall -
Darker colors change the mood for the autumn season ...

Darker greens and hints of brown can work for a late autumn / winter scheme. Switching wall art images to a collection of mirrors gets the home holiday ready to sparkle & shine. And as mentioned earlier, the cooler evening temps called back the white shag rug for winter warmth...
